Find out what Google Analytics can contribute to the tough question: "Should I go mobile?". Let's have a look at the standard reporting and advanced segmentation relating to mobile that is available in Google Analytics V5. Then review an example Custom Report - which you can download for free into your Google Analytics account!

The winner is... mobile!

Lens10 recently surveyed hundreds of online retailers and their suppliers at Online Retailer 2011. We asked "what is the toughest question you want web analytics to answer today". The winner, with over a third of the votes, was "Should I go mobile?".

That is no surprise given that Australia has the second highest smartphone penetration in the world according to recent Google research. Last year mobile internet penetration passed 50% of online Australians and continues to grow rapidly in 2011 with a raft of new smart phones coming onto the market and tablet ownership expected to triple from 8%, according to Nielson's Australian Online Consumer Report.

So we ask, what can Google Analytics tell you today to help decide, should you go mobile?

 Google Analytics makes it easy to review how many of your visitors are already coming from mobile devices. Plus you can compare metrics between existing mobile and non-mobile users of your site, to see how effective you already are in engaging and converting mobile users.

Standard Google Analytics Reporting of Mobile Visitors

Google Analytics includes two standard reports about visitors from mobile devices.

The first is a Mobile Overview report, which shows a breakdown between mobile traffic and non-mobile traffic. By selecting the standard tabs in this report, you can compare Mobile versus Non-Mobile traffic against your standard goals, transactions and adsense reports.

Google Analytics: Visitors from Mobile Devices

The second report is the Devices report, which provides information about the various mobile devices that visit your site.

The devices report includes three dimensions: Mobile Device Info, Mobile Device Branding, and Mobile Input Selector.  Mobile Device Info is the actual hardware that visited a site and it includes an image of the device. View the device pictures by clicking on the camera icon next to the name of a device.

Advanced Segmentation - Mobile Visitors

You can easily filter standard reports to just show visitors from mobile devices by applying the "Mobile Visitors" advanced segment, already available in the list of default segments.

Customised Reporting - Free Example Report

We have created an example custom report to compare mobile versus non-mobile user:

(a) activity - Visits and % New Visits;

(b) engagement - Pages/visit and Avg Time on Site; and

(c) results - Goal Conversion Rate, Goal Value and Revenue.

Get the input you need for a business case to create a mobile version of your site. This report includes the volume of potential users and the potential return on your investment if mobile users increased their engagement and conversion rate to the level of non-mobile users.
